PRINCIPAL'S LETTER

September 8, 2010

Dear Parents and Guardians:

PRAYERS AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Prayers:

Let us keep Braden Burns (K) and his family in our prayers as he continues to receive medical treatment. We pray for the mother of Steve Almes who is gravely ill. I ask your prayers for Conchita Amador who passed away over the weekend. She and her family are close friends with my family. She raised eight children and was well know in the Mission District for her kind and charitable work. She leaves behind a large family of great and grandchildren. She was the cook at Serra House for retired priests in San Mateo. Long time diocesan priest and now retired Fr. Tom Seagrave led the rosary service last night. He looked good after a long battle with cancer. Please keep Fr. Tom in your prayers. We pray for the successful future Bishop Robert McElroy who was ordained yesterday at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Our Student Council leadership, along with Mrs. Gomez, Mr. Du, and myself, attended the beautiful ordination ceremony. Bishop McElroy is well known for his erudite approach and pastoral leadership. Plus, he is a strong advocate for Catholic education.

Back to School Night

Thank you to Michelle Jackson and the Advisory Board for coordinating last week’s Back-to-School night and to all of our parent leaders for welcoming our families back to school. Congratulations to Ray and Michelle Jackson in recognition of their outstanding service and leadership to our school and parish community over the last nine years. Both continue to serve the community with graciousness, humor, and generosity. We are grateful for the many sacrifices they have made over the years, particularly for the times they have been away from family. We thank our faculty and staff for welcoming our families back to the new school year as we begin a new school year.

Thank you to Advisory Board Member Anna Wondany for coordinating volunteer coverage for our booth at last weekend’s Millbrae Food and Wine Festival and to the parent volunteers.

FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE

IMPORTANT MESSAGES:

Center Plate needs more volunteers for coverage, particularly for the September 20th game. We need 12 total and currently have 9 signed up. It is important we fully staff the current booth so that we can keep it assigned to our school. The beer and pizza booth is the most profitable of the booths and it is centrally located. I had lots of fun joining last week’s crew and I plan on helping out in future games. Center Plate is required for parents of student-athletes and is open to anyone who would like to join us. It is a quick and good way to earn service hours. You work hard but the time flies. It is fun! All proceeds support the Athletic Program. See our school website for more information.
Counselor’s Corner begins with Mr. Steve Abrams, our school counselor, offering insights on topics useful for our families.
QSP Packets went home today. Please give it your full support to QSP, as this is our major fundraiser for our Athletic Programs. QSP was taken over by Genevieve, hence the new name. It is the same quality of products. Please give it your full support. All the information is in the packet sent home today and summarized on the backside of the packet. The QSP/Genevieve fundraiser end September 24. You are encouraged to use online ordering of products. The prizes for participating are described in an attachment in today’s communication.
Head Room Parent Committee Meeting is today at 6:00 PM in the School Library.
8th Grade Parent Information Meeting is tomorrow, September 9th, at 7:00 PM in the 8th Grade Classroom.
Ecology Coastal Clean-up is set for Saturday, September 18th . Students and parent volunteers are needed.
Altar Service Training September 14th and 15th from 3:15 pm to 4:00 pm in the Church.
CCD classes start next Tuesday, September 14th from 3:45 pm to 5:00 pm. Please do not park inside the cone area by classrooms during this time period, as CCD students will be arriving and dismissing in this safe area.
• Please do not deliver lunches to your child on the play yard. Per policy, lunches must be brought to the front office lobby to be picked up by students.
Reminder: Monday, September 20th is a 12:35 pm dismissal day.
Double Parking. Thank you for parents who take the time to park safely and who follow policy during drop off and dismissal times. I have had to call the police to help oversee double parking that occurs on both Broadway and Magnolia in the morning and afternoons. It needs to stop - period. If not, an accident will happen. For one thing according to Community Police Office and Parishioner George Ledbetter, “Cars tend to speed up to go around double parked cars, which add to the likelihood of an accident happening.” I am very concerned about this issue. If parents continually ignore this policy, and the law, then I will be contacting you directly. Safety first and safety last. Lastly, please refrain from walking through the cars lanes at dismissal. Use the sidewalk to go around. Please refrain from walking through the ally way between the rectory and Parish Center during dismissal and drop off times. Cross between the rectory and Church and then use the Magnolia Street sidewalk. When returning, use the school long hallway and leave out the south gate to Broadway. Older students can meet you outside the Parish Center after school is dismissed to make it easier.
Medication Policy
Any student needing medication must have a written instruction letter from their doctor, the medication in it’s original box or vial, and a letter from the parent requesting administration of medication. We must have a new doctor’s letter each year; last year’s is not acceptable. If you have medication here from last year, please come to the office to inspect expiration dates. Any medication means any medication e.g. inhalers, EpiPen, prescribed medication or over the counter medications.
Service Hours Opportunity
We need lunch time food servers to assist in distributing the lunches in the Parish Center between 11:45 am and 1:00 pm. See Dr. Colville if you’re interested.

Art in Action Update
We still need help to staff the 8th grade. If you are interested in helping with the program, please contact Pauline Sanchez @ 650-869-5610 or pauline.sanchez@cbs.com. Thank you!

St. Vincent de Paul Service and Donation
We are in need of items to bring to St. Vincent de Paul this week as the 7th and 8th graders begin their second Saturday service in the soup kitchen. Please donate the following items by bringing them to school: Peanut Butter, Jelly, food snack [any type], and Capri Suns Drinks. Items will be brought to the 4th grade.

Athletics
Please check the website for important information regarding volleyball and baseball. Practice and game schedules are located there. The QSP fall fundraiser for Athletics started Sept. 8. Enclosed in today’s communication is a QSP announcement and packages went home today with students. Please review and support!
